Cold Steel 5-Max Scout folding pocket knife, work knife, with a stonewash finish, US-10A stainless steel blade, black GFN handle and Tri-Ad Lock.
The Cold Steel 5-Max Scout takes the philosophy that has made Cold Steel’s reputation – building extremely robust, oversized folding knives capable of tackling tasks usually reserved for a fixed-blade knife – almost to the point of caricature.
With a total open length of 30 cm, a 12.7 cm blade and an impressive weight of 368 gr, the 5-Max Scout is clearly not designed to be a discreet EDC knife. It is a true XXL folding knife, designed for users seeking, above all, power, strength and safety.
Its wide Drop Point blade is made from AUS-10A, a Japanese stainless steel particularly well-suited to the knife’s purpose. It offers a good balance between strength, cutting performance, ease of sharpening and corrosion resistance.
The blade thickness of 4.8 mm immediately sets the tone: the 5-Max Scout is built like a proper tool. This substantial steel cross-section provides excellent rigidity and contributes to the knife’s exceptionally robust feel.
The Stonewash finish is particularly well suited to this philosophy, as it naturally conceals some of the marks that may appear during heavy use.
The black GFN handle features a deeply chiselled texture to provide excellent grip. Its 18 cm length ensures a generous grip, even for those with large hands or when carrying out tasks requiring greater force.
The locking mechanism is, of course, one of the 5-Max Scout’s key selling points. Cold Steel uses its famous Tri-Ad Lock, a particularly robust evolution of the Back Lock principle. This mechanism has long been one of the brand’s hallmarks and plays a major part in the reputation of its large folding knives designed for heavy-duty use.
The knife is opened using ambidextrous thumb studs, whilst a clip allows it to be carried. A lanyard hole completes the features.
The result is a knife that is deliberately over-the-top: 30 cm when open and weighing nearly 370 gr. But that is precisely what makes the 5-Max Scout so appealing. Whilst most manufacturers are constantly seeking to reduce the weight and bulk of their pocket knives, Cold Steel is taking the exact opposite approach here.
Tellknives Review
Let’s be clear: the Cold Steel 5-Max Scout isn’t for everyone, and that’s exactly what we like about it!
With its 12.7 cm blade, 4.8 mm thick, weighing 368 gr and featuring a Tri-Ad Lock, it belongs to that very special category of folding knives that give the impression of having a fixed blade hinged in the middle.
It’s a model we’d recommend first and foremost to users looking for an extremely robust work knife, but also to Cold Steel enthusiasts who particularly appreciate the brand’s most outrageous creations. The 5-Max Scout fully embraces its excess: it is enormous, heavy, extremely sturdy and instantly recognisable as a Cold Steel.
