The Randall Made Model 19-5 Bushmaster is one of the most robust hunting models produced by the Orlando-based manufacturer. This particular example offers a particularly refined interpretation, built around five carefully matched factory options and, above all, an exceptional thuja wood handle.

Forged from carbon steel, its powerful 12.7 cm blade retains the characteristic proportions of the Bushmaster. Its 5.0 mm thickness, generous grind and back bevel give it a striking presence for a knife whose overall length is a modest 24.5 cm. Thumb notches / jimping, also available as an option, complement the blade near the guard and improve thumb grip.

The centrepiece of this example, however, remains its thuja handle. And we have no hesitation whatsoever in describing it as exceptional. Richly figured, the wood displays a remarkable concentration of dark burls, grain patterns and shades, with a depth that changes depending on the angle from which it is viewed.

As thuja is a natural material, selecting this option from Randall obviously does not allow one to predict the pattern of the piece of wood that will be used on the finished knife. On this particular example, chance has worked particularly well: it is a real winner. The richness of the grain is evident across virtually the entire circumference of the handle, giving this Model 19-5 a truly unique character.

Added to this visual beauty is a more unexpected characteristic of thuja: its naturally sweet, woody scent, which the handle continues to exude over time.

The design is completed by a nickel silver guard, aluminium and black spacers, and an elegant Crow’s Beak pommel. The contrast between the polished light-coloured metal, the fine black and aluminium lines, and the warm tones of the thuja is particularly striking.

This is probably what best sums up the appeal of this particular knife.

When a natural material is chosen for a bespoke knife, there is inevitably an element of chance until the finished piece is revealed. In this case, we can say without exaggeration: it’s a real winner.

The piece of thuja selected by Randall is exceptional. With a particularly high number of dark burls, a lively grain, shades of brown and honey, and depth of pattern, the wood is spectacular without being overbearing and remains interesting from virtually every angle. Two Model 19-5s may be fitted with exactly the same option from the catalogue; they will never have exactly the same neck.

And the pleasure isn’t just visual. Thuja wood has this astonishing ability to retain its sweet, warm, woody scent for a long time. So holding this Randall in your hands appeals almost as much to the sense of smell as it does to the eye.

The four other options have also been particularly well chosen; the nickel silver offers greater finesse than traditional brass, the aluminium and black spacers elegantly highlight the ends of the wood, and the Duralumin Crow’s Beak Pommel superbly completes the neck’s silhouette. Finally, the jimping is a more functional option, perfectly in keeping with the Bushmaster’s original purpose.
