Do you want to buy an axe or a hatchet? It is important to know that there are many types of axes depending on the use you will have. In this category, you will find all kinds of axes from the Merlin, to the camp axe or the woodcutter's axe.

A specific axe for each use

The woodcutter's axe

This tool is also called a felling axe because it is specially designed for felling trees. It is a clever balance, neither too heavy (to remain manageable) nor too light to keep a certain power and efficiency. This felling axe generally weighs between 1.5 and 2.5kg. It is generally between 50 and 65cm long

The head of the felling axe or lumberjack's axe is very wide to allow a large cutting surface. Depending on the size of your hands, it is important to choose an axe with a long enough handle, because you need to be able to put both hands on it. Indeed, the lumberjack's axe is always handled with two hands.

Be careful, the woodcutter's axe is often confused with the Merlin, although it does not have the same function. The Merlin is too heavy to be used as a felling axe.

The Merlin or splitting axe

Frequently confused with the lumberjack's axe, the Merlin or splitting axe is particularly heavy for splitting wood efficiently. Depending on the size you choose, the Merlin can weigh up to 3.5kg

Easily recognizable by its short, pointed axe head, the Merlin penetrates the wood easily. Then the head thickens to allow splitting the wood.

Sizes vary greatly for splitting axes. As it is used with two hands, it is recommended to find the optimal size for your hands

The camp axe or hand axe

It is not uncommon for light axes to be part of a bushcrafter's or survivalist's kit. Indeed, very complementary to a camp knife, these axes take care of the heavy work on the camp. Although there are many models of camp axes, we recommend that you get a light axe between 1 and 1.5kg. For more versatility, choose a large but sharp head. This way, it will be able to cut thick branches while being able to split wood.

The multipurpose axe or hatchet

In addition to very specific models such as the Merlin, there are also multi-purpose hatchets which are very easy to handle (between 0.5 and 1.5kg). They are practical and can be used for all kinds of work such as felling, cutting and especially pruning. It is recommended to have a multipurpose axe because it will surprise you in its use in the garden as in the forest!
