Machetes

Machetes are very useful because they are very versatile for outdoor use. In our latitudes, we don't necessarily think of using a machete for outdoor work. Thanks to its very long blade and its weight on the front, it is a formidable tool which is between the camp knife and the axe.

Originally, the machete was designed for very dense terrain and its blade is designed to cut down foliage and vegetation of any kind easily. As such, the machete is a true bush knife or that famous cutter.

In this sense, it is a real tool for clearing brush easily and quickly. But the size of the machete and its weight will also allow its users to make it a real ally on the camp for the work of felling and beating. Indeed, the machete has also been designed for cutting thick nuts in hot countries such as coconuts, for example. In this way, the use of a machete offers real versatility and can be used in different environments.

There are many forms of machetes and although there are no precise "rules", we can nevertheless give some advice on their specific uses.

The Latin machete: This is the most common machete. It has a long, straight blade that is generally quite flexible, making it ideal for clearing land and brush, but not very effective as soon as the diameter of the branches to be cut increases.

The Bolo machete: this is a Latin machete reinforced by a blade that is generally heavier and able to cut thicker sections of wood.

The Parang machete: this machete has a slightly thicker shape at the end. The purpose of this thickening is to put more weight on the end and thus add more striking power. A Parang is chosen when you need to cut large diameters of branches and do some beating.

The Kukri machete: recognizable among thousands by its "circumflex" shape, the Kukri machete is recognized as the most versatile of machetes. It has a good cutting power and will also be a good ally on the camp for more modest work. It is generally the preferred machete of survivalists and bushcrafters.

Goloks machetes: these are blades with a more military use. They are generally small in size so they can be carried easily. They are not generally used for outdoor use.

Panga and Tapanga machetes: these blades are pure agricultural tools. They are very specific and characterized by their right-angled ends

As you can see, the machete has a very specific shape depending on the region where it comes from, its environment and therefore its use.
