Forged from carbon steel, its 12.6 cm blade retains the iconic profile of the Model 1, immediately recognisable by its long clip point tip and sharpened back edge. At 5.0 mm thick, it retains that sense of robustness characteristic of Randall knives despite the Model 1-5’s relatively compact dimensions.

But it is undoubtedly the handle that gives this knife its personality; Randall has used Maroon Micarta here, whose deep burgundy tones complement the various brass components superbly. The choice of the Single Finger Handle proves particularly apt: the shaping of the handle cuts through the different layers of the Micarta, revealing beautiful concentric patterns, which are particularly visible around the index finger indentation and along the curves of the handle.

Brass features prominently without being overdone. The double guard is accompanied by brass liners, whilst an imposing brass butt cap finishes off the handle. The butt cap also features the Thong Hole option, allowing a lanyard to pass directly through the pommel.

The result is a Model 1-5 that feels particularly substantial in the hand: despite a total length of just 23.8 cm, the knife weighs 259 gr. This weight, largely concentrated in the handle and its brass pommel, gives it a presence in the hand that is quite unusual for the 5-inch version of the Model 1.

Tellknives review:
There are some heavily customised Randall knives where the various options seem to have been chosen individually. Then there are configurations where everything seems to have been designed as a cohesive whole. This Model 1-5 clearly falls into the latter category.

The starting point is the Maroon Micarta. Its deep burgundy colour already has plenty of character, but it is its combination with the Single Finger Handle that really makes all the difference here. As Randall carves the Micarta, he cuts through its various layers, revealing a particularly spectacular concentric pattern around the index finger indentation.

On this particular knife, the result is truly superb.

The choice of brass then makes perfect sense. The guard, brass liners and brass butt cap complement the warm tones of the Maroon Micarta and give the knife a more classic than tactical feel. Finally, the thong hole adds a small functional touch to the pommel whilst perfectly preserving its silhouette.

And you only need to pick up this Model 1-5 to discover another facet of its character: weighing 259 gr and measuring just 23.8 cm, it is a (relatively) small Randall but a particularly substantial one!
The brass butt cap obviously contributes to this feel and gives the knife a very different presence from a more conventional Model 1-5.

We also appreciate that Randall has retained carbon steel here, perfectly in keeping with the historical spirit of the Model 1, as well as its genuine, sharpened back edge.

As always with a highly customisable configuration, each of these five options could be ordered separately. What interests us more here is the way they work together. The Maroon Micarta pairs almost naturally with the brass; the Single Finger Handle highlights the material’s grain; and the Brass Butt Cap provides a superb finish to this particularly finely crafted handle.

A Model 1-5 that we won’t describe as rare simply because it’s heavily customised. We prefer a more accurate description: particularly successful.
